GreazeFest in 2001

GreazeFest is now organised solely by Lori Lee Cash and she moves the festival to the Fishbowl in Redcliffe, Qld. 2001 sees the first of many USA special guests play at GreazeFest and this year it is Josie Kreuzer from California.

The normally sleepy seaside town of Redcliffe didn’t know what hit it when hundreds of greazers from all around Australia and New Zealand, rumbled into Redcliffe for what turned out to be a HUGE 3 day party of red hot rockabilly at the second annual GreazeFest. The rockabilly gods were smiling and blessed the weekend with warm and sunny weather - just perfect for the seaside setting.

The Fishbowl welcomed the crowd of tattooed, greazy haired, wallet chained, sharply dressed greazers with open arms, in what turned out to be a perfect venue for the action packed weekend. The Fishbowl went over the top with its outrageous vintage decor - even the motel rooms were decked out with fifties bedroom and lounge settings, Tretchikoff prints on the wall, cocktail bars, fluffy zebra stripe wallpaper, Cowboys and Indians, Can-Can Girls and all sorts of mid century decorating.

A big thank you to all the bands that performed at the GreazeFest. Topping the list is the Hot Rod Girl, Josie Kreuzer, who traveled all the way from California to charm everyone with her gorgeous style of traditional rockabilly and hot rod rock and roll.

Doug, Jon and Geoff from The Chrome Daddies backed Josie and pulled it off like they had been playing her songs for years. The Chrome Daddies also played their own show earlier in the evening and gave the crowd one of their best performances ever. The Satellite V and Johnny Green’s Blues Cowboys kicked off the GreazeFest on Friday night and had the joint rocking until the early hours of the morning. The Satellites from Adelaide tore up the Fishbowl early Saturday evening with a killer set of high performance rockabilly. The Tailgaters cranked up the volume with their swamp rock and backwoods preaching rock’n’roll.

Saturday’s all ages Hot Rod Show was full of low and wild customs, real gone rats, flamed bodies, cool custom cycles, hundreds of tattoos, records, cds, vintage clothing, model cars, hamburgers, beer, beer and more beer. Held outdoors in the car park of the Fishbowl, the Rats’n’Rides Show attracted over one thousand sight-seers made up of young and old rockabilly fans, real deal hot rodders, curious locals with their kids plus some real weird looking dogs. The Starlite Ramblers and The Tractor Jacks kick started the afternoon crowd with two outstanding sets of full tilt rockabilly.

Sunday’s Seaside Rat Ride was very well attended with 50 cars lining up for a slow crawl to Scarborough that caused the whole town of Redcliffe to stop in their tracks to watch the hot rods and customs roll by. Those who were still partying on Sunday evening were lucky enough to witness a very entertaining performance by The Fuelers, who challenged the greaziest members of the crowd for some hilarious audience participation antics.
