| What Is Kustom Fashion? Thoughts on the look of this lifestyle by Sheri Bomb: The many facets of fashion reflect an important role within kustom kulture. It is one more way of embracing the lifestyle and can often be a major drawcard to the kulture in general. Kustom kulture fashion is as varied as the people who belong to it and can take on many looks from vintage purists to reproductions with a modern twist. The pinups and glamour icons of the 1940s and 50s have a distinct influence on the ladies wardrobe while the gearheads and greazers adopt hot road and workshop wear with a no-nonsense attitude to complement their rides. While these are the most rocognised looks, the scene also encompasses western styles with detailed embroidery and pearl snap buttons harking back to the early roots of hillbilly, plus Hawaiian fabrics and tiki threads all the way down to dark denims and t-shirts. While these are the main themes that run through the scene, the fashion can be simply defined as it is – customised with a k. This is not what you'd see in the mainstream, or off the rack, but often vintage, made to order, imported or DIYed. Eagerly awaited each year (often referred to as Christmas for rockabillies) GreazeFest is a chance to get dressed to the nines and be surrounded by like-minded folk. People make such an effort with their appearance, and just like clockwork GreazeFest rolls around every August allowing plenty of time to plan, prepare and perfect their ensemble. What will you be wearing to GreazeFest? |
